Shintak (Oracle; 신탁/神託) for solo daegeum. 13' (2018)

Shintak (신탁 神託 – “Oracle”) is a one-movement work for solo daegum performer. It uses an original notation system based on traditional Korean mensural notation and musical theory. Traditional Western staff notation is never used.

The piece proceeds through seven non-programmatic but evocative sections: Night (밤) – Cairn (석총石塚) – Interior (속) – Trance (무아지경 無我之境) – Voice (음성 音聲) – Hollow (공허 空虛) – Night (밤). In combination, they suggest a dream scene: an ancient place; an occult ritual, in secret, culminating in an ecstasy and the receipt of a message. The daegum performer, faced with this score, is a medium. Engaged in the deciphering of ancient, mysterious symbols, they render unto us a dark riddle. What are we to make of this voice from the other side?

Shintak was commissioned by Yoo Hong.
