Tongues of Angels, for viola and piano. 12’ (2018-19)
Tongues of Angels was composed by composer/pianist Jared Redmond for PART 1 of Kurt Rohde's Farewell Tour PARTS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6. It is an exploration of sensitivity, fragility, and the ‘otherworldly’ experience of of guided repetition and sacred trance. The sound world of the work is intensely delicate, with many sounds on the limit of audibility. In the score, absolute tempi and duration are rarely given. While there is no improvisation per se, the length of certain motifs, repeated fragments of melody, and long resonances must be “felt” rather than counted. Both the pianist and violist must thus listen intensely to each other, following the breath of their own bodies and of the emerging sound..
